Chapel, Lakeland, Florida, 2017 (1954 - S.258). Set of 30
exterior and 24 interior photographs of Danforth Chapel,
photographed on April 4, 2017. On a trip to Florida, we took
the opportunity to visit and photograph the Florida Southern
College Campus. April 4 was a beautiful, sunny Florida
spring day.
Danforth Chapel was the eight and final building on the
Florida Southern College campus. Designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright in 1954, ground-breaking ceremonies were held in May
1954, it was completed on March 4, 1955. Adjacent to the
larger Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, Danforth Chapel, was the
second chapel constructed on campus. It was the only
building in which Frank Lloyd Wright used traditional leaded
glass on campus, and is frank Lloyd Wright’s last executed
stained-glass windows. It is also known as Minor Chapel, and
uses native Florida tidewater red cypress. and Wright's
signature Cherokee Red floors. It was named in honor of
William H. Danforth, founder of the Ralston-Purina Company,
whose $10,000 donation helped fund its construction.
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer wrote: “For several years Florida
Southern College had contemplated the erection of a small
chapel, called Minor Chapel on the various drawings, to be
built near, but not attached to, the main chapel, the Anne
Pfeitfer Chapel of 1938. This was to provide a space for
smaller services, along with a seminar-library. On earlier
versions of the minor |

chapel the space for study and seminar was placed adjacent
to the chapel itself. But on the scheme that was designed in
1954, the seminar on the ground floor is part of the actual
structure, along with two larger rooms for the religion
department on the balcony level above. The gently sloped
hipped roof projects at a strong angle out over the stained
glass screen behind the altar. Outside this glass screen are
two areas for planting, bordered by concrete block retaining
walls which reflect the general nature of the plan of the
chapel as a whole.”

of glass in the entire huge complex - the distinctive floor
to ceiling red and yellow panels of stained glass that form
simple bands of primary color set against alternating bands
of clear glass through which the changing skies can be

photographs of Danforth Chapel, photographed by Douglas M.
Steiner on April 4, 2017. These photographs aim to capture
and preserve a moment in time, documenting the intricate
details that contribute to the overall design and reflecting
the current condition of the home. To expedite their
addition to our website, we have chosen to omit individual

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954,
