CHAUNCEY L. WILLIAMS RESIDENCE 2018 (1895 - S.033)

Chauncey L. Williams Residence, River Forest, Illinois, 2018 (1895 - S.033). Set of 38 images of the Chauncey L. Williams Residence in River Forest, Illinois. In 1895 Chauncey Williams hired Wright to design a home for him in Oak Park (now River Forest). William's home became Wright's tenth completed commission after leaving Sullivan. The steepness of the roof is similar to the Roloson Rowhouses, Moore and Young Houses. Massive brick chimneys slice into the roof line on the North and South elevations. As the chimney extends down on the South elevation the South plane cuts through the roof and ties into the Roman brick that runs beneath the window sills. The brick on the South elevation also extends to the rear of the house forming a terrace. The wall of the terrace is patterned by rows of matching diamond shapes. A unique "arts & crafts" element found only in the Williams home was a mound of boulders embedded on either side of the entryway and along the foundation, extending back to the back of the house. According to Grant Manson "The boulders were gathered on summer weekends by the Wrights, the Williamses and the Wallers from the bed of the Des Plaines River... to symbolize the Illinois prairie's era of glaciation..." The river was only about a block away. The dormers were remodeled in 1900. One original dormer remains on the North elevation. The original dormers were square, bordering a semi-circle, replicating the shape front door. The semi-circular portion of the front door is embellished with circular designs. The semi-circular theme is also carried into the terrace in the front of the house. The

remodel added a peak matching the peak over the Library and Dining Room. It also eliminating the half circle. Orlando Giannini, who had painted murals in Wright's home painted his last mural for Wright for the Williams home. Wright embedded his logo, a Celtic cross within a circle, in the face of the short pedestal to the left side of the door, a pretext to the red tile of later homes. The rear of the house has been greatly altered, but is hidden from the street. A portion of the back terrace has been enclosed. The Auvergne Press was established in February 1896 by two of Wright's clients, William Herman Winslow and Chauncey L. Williams, to create hand printed, limited edition books. They purchased a large size Washington Press. Winslow was more of the hands-on of the partnership. He may have also been the one that purchased the press, for it was housed in his home, and stayed with Winslow for the second endeavor, "The House Beautiful" which Winslow and Wright published. Williams had the publishing knowledge, as a partner in Way & Williams, "Publishers, Importers and Booksellers of Fine Books". Together, Winslow and Williams asked Wright to design the title page, he also designed the printer's device, intertwining three "W"s. Their first endeavor was "The Eve of St. Agnes." Photographed during a visit to Chicago by Douglas M. Steiner October 7, 2018. Copyright 2018. In an effort to expedite adding these photographs to this website, we have dispensed with a description for each photograph. Set of 38 high res 20 X 13.5 digital images.
