ARCHITECTURE - 1982 (#2019)

[flw/_Private/StampNav.htm]

Original Illustration
Description: September 30, 1982 - 20c #2019 - American Architecture: Block of four commemorative stamps is the fourth and final set issued in the American Architecture series which began in 1979.  The four structures featured in this set focus on modern architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania;  Mies van der Rohe, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL;  Walter Gropius, Gropius House, Lincoln, Mass.;  and Eero Saarinen, Dulles Airport, Washington, D.C.
Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright, Crayon on board.  Artist: Walter DuBois Richards,
Art director: Bradbury Thompson, First day of issue: September 30, 1982.  Elegant architecture typically makes beautiful stamp art as well. Walter DuBois Richards, designer of 37 stamps, created this impressive rendering of Frank Lloyd Wright's Pennsylvania masterpiece as part of a 16-stamp series honoring great accomplishments in American architecture.  Walter DuBois Richards graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and moved to New York in 1936, where he created illustrations for Madison Avenue advertising accounts and national publications.  A gifted draftsman, watercolorist, and lithographer, he has traveled the world on assignment for Life magazine, the U.S. Air Force, and many American corporations.  His paintings have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and are included in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Britain Museum, and the Pentagon.  His 37 U.S. stamps include a series honoring 16 national architectural treasures.
This stamp was issue on September 30, 1982.  Where as #1089 was issued on the 100th anniversary, this stamp was issued at the headquarters of the American Institute of Architects on the 125th anniversary.  Scott Catalog USA: #2019.
