Title:
River Forest Tennis Club, Floor Plan 1906 (1906 - S.119).
Description: Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in
1906. When the River Forest Tennis Club caught fire and burned
in 1906, Wright was tapped to redesign their building. The
Tennis Club was 204 feet long. There were two covered Porte
Cochere (Carriage Entryways), and three Fireplaces. The left
side included a Women’s Locker Room and Kitchen. The right
included the Men's Locker Room. The Fireplace Nook and Alcoves
on either side included built-in seating. Doors opened outward
from the expansive interior, in essence, removing the wall which
lead to an open Terrace which ran nearly the full length of the
building. Wright designed each end by rotating a square 90
degrees. On either side of the Men's and Women's Locker rooms
was a elongated row of Balustrated windows, or as Wright
specified, 4"x4" Vertical Spindles with glass between. This
allowed natural light in, while providing a measure of privacy.

fireplaces. The left side included a Women’s Locker Room and

This photograph shows the building as Frank Lloyd Wright
designed it, in its original location before it was moved in
1920. On the roof, above the stairs that lead up to the Terrace,
there appear to be two poles, left and right, with banners on
each. The Terrace runs from one end to the other, about
two-thirds of the length. Frank Lloyd Wright described it as, "A
simple wooden building set up on posts, built to house the River
Forest Tennis Club. Located and planned to afford an outlook
over the tennis courts and a good dancing floor, with
comfortable ingle nooks. The walls are of wide boards laid on
horizontally, joints covered with battens."

2018 (1906 - S.119).
Description: Set of 20 exterior photographs of
the River Forest Tennis Club Pool House. This building was
erected in 1988. Although not designed by Frank Lloyd Wright,
many elements of the original Tennis Club building were used,
but on a much smaller scale. With all the changes and revisions
to the Tennis Club, this Pool House almost gives a clearer
visual of Frank Lloyd Wright original design. Photographed
during a visit to Chicago, by Douglas M. Steiner October 8,
2018. In an effort to expedite adding these photographs to this
website, we have dispensed with a description for each
photograph.

design was repeated
behind the built-in
seating of the two end
fireplaces. This
enclosed the area near
the fireplaces and added
a measurer of intimacy,
in much the same way as
his tall back chairs
surrounding some of his
dining room tables,
created the feel of a
room within a room.. The
balustrades were also on
either side of the
center fireplace, and
ran from entry to entry.
Wright also included
the River Forest Tennis
Club in his 1910
Ausgeführte Bauten,
Plate 42 with the
caption that read: "A
simple wooden building
set up on posts, built a
house the river forest
tennis club. Located and
planned to afford an
outlook over the tennis
courts and a good
dancing floor, with
comfortable inglenook's.
The walls are of wide
boards laid on

The building closest to the swimming pool was added in 1988
but follows Wright’s original; design. Photographed during a

River Forest Tennis Club Pool House. This building was
erected in 1988. Although not designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright, many elements of the original Tennis Club building
were used, but on a
much smaller scale. With all the changes
and revisions

to the Tennis Club, this Pool House almost
gives a clearer visual of Frank Lloyd Wright original

River Forest Tennis Club, River Forest, Illinois, Interior
2018 (1906 - S.119). Set of 21 interior photographs of the
River Forest Tennis Club. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in
1906. Low, elongated, single-story and finished in board-and
batten siding contributes to the dominate horizontal look of
the building. There have been additions and revisions,
including a move in 1920 that altered Wright’s initial
design. It included three fireplaces, one on either end, and
one in the center outside wall. Opposite the center
fireplace, the original design included seven sets of doors
that opened out to the terrace. That number appears to have
doubled. A stage has been added where the center fireplace
sets. Many other changes have been made, minimizing Wright’s
original design.
The logo which appears throughout the building was

designed by Wright. Seating on either side of two end
fireplaces, providing a touch of intimacy, have been
removed, and now set out in the open. A stark difference.
One end included a Ladies Locker Room and a Kitchen. The
other end a Men's Locker Room. Doors opened outward from the
expansive interior, in essence, removing the wall which lead
to an open Terrace which ran more than half the length of
the building. Wright originally designed each end by
rotating a square 90 degrees, an element that no longer
