DR. H. & DOROTHY H. TURKEL RESIDENCE (1955 - S.388) Date: 1955/2024
Title: Dr. H. and Dorothy H. Turkel Residence, Detroit, Michigan, Chair Circa 1955/2024 (1955 - S.388).
Description: Four photographs of the Dorthy Turkel chair. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1955.
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer wrote, “The Turkel house is a rare example of a two-story Usonian Automatic. Mrs. Turkel was a musician, and the large two-story music room was designed to accommodate her needs. The rest of the plan continues along an "L" shape, the entrance near the music room on the south, the study, workspace and dining in the main wing, 3 sons' bedrooms and maid's room in the other wing. Upstairs are bedrooms for the daughter and Dr. and Mrs. Turkel. Mrs. Turkel's study turns into a balcony over the music room below. The columns between the glass doors employ the mitered blocks with their glass inserts on the upper third of the column, above a base of 4' solid blocks.” Frank Lloyd Wright Monograph 1951-1959, 1988.
The design is very similar to the chairs in the Stuart Richardson (1940 - S.282) and Robert Winn Houses (1950 - S.301). This chair was auctioned at Toomey & Co. on March 26, 2024. Realized price $40,000. Constructed of mahogany, mahogany plywood, Cherokee red vinyl. Courtesy of Toomey & Co. See Additional Wright Chairs...
