Title: Marshall Erdman Prefab #1 Homes (1956).

Description: Perspective view of the House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Marshall Erdman, FLLW #5518.05. Wright designed three prefab homes for Marshal Erdman and Associates. Nine Prefab #1 homes were completed: Van Tamelen (1956 - S.406); Jackson (1957 - S.407.1); Duncan (1957 - S.407.2); Iber (1957 - S.408); Post (1957 - S.409.1); Cass (1959 - S.409.2); Zaferiou (1961 - S.410); Mollica (1958 - S.411.1); LaFond (1960 - S.411.2). Prefab #2: two homes were constructed. Prefab #3 was never built. Marshall Erdman and Frank Lloyd Wright first discussed the idea of working together on a prefabricated design in 1954. The design is a one-story house, with the addition of a lower level when on a hillside. It included a large living room, dining room, family room and kitchen, four bedrooms and two bath. Description: Perspective view of the front of the Duncan Residence, published in the Summer 2008issue of the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly. Wright designed three prefab homes for Marshal Erdman and Associates.        In the December 1956 issue of House & Home, "Here is prefabrication’s biggest news for 1957. Frank Lloyd Wright has at long last built a prefab house and Erdman Homes is putting it on the market for 1957. This is both big news and amazing news. It is big news because it gives prefabrication – once the step child of home building – the prestige associated with the greatest name – the prestige associated with the greatest name in contemporary architecture. It is amazing news, because the principle advocate of standardization and modular planning had to wait 60 years before he got his chance to put his original theories into practice. Wright had been designing panel construction systems since 1910 using materials like wood, steel and concrete..."
In the December 1956 issue of House & Home, the Van Tamelen Residence, the first Erdman Prefab #1 (1956 - S.406) to be constructed, was featured on the cover and in an article. The Duncan home was constructed much like the Van Tamelen. Outside walls were faced with textured Masonite boards. Horizontal wood battens were added every 16". Inside walls were faced with 1/4" mahogany plywood, with horizontal battens every 16". A blonde pigmented bleach was used to lighten and warn the mahogany. Interior and exterior battens lined up with the joints in the blocks. Masonry blocks were standard 8 x 8 x 16". The roof was covered in red asphalt shingles. Horizontal battens were added, creating ridges, adding to the horizontal appearance of the house.

In the December 1956 issue of House & Home, "Here is prefabrication's biggest news for 1957. Frank Lloyd Wright has at long last built a prefab house and Erdman Homes is putting it on the market for 1957. This is both big news and amazing news. It is amazing news, because the principle advocate of standardization and modular planning had to wait 60 years before he got his chance to put his original theories into practice. Wright had been designing panel construction systems since 1910 using materials like wood, steel and concrete..."
In 1959, Erdman wrote: "A house design by Frank Lloyd Wright is no ordinary house. In a real sense, it is a work of art. Such a house is not sold or built like an ordinary house. Before his death Mr. Wright personally approved final designs and sites for each right house manufactured exclusively by the Erdman company."
During a road trip through Illinois in October of 2018, we headed to Lisle in search of the Duncan Residence. We checked and double checked the address. The address was correct but the house was not Wright. In its place was an uncreative two-story brick house. One no doubt Frank Lloyd Wright would have criticized. In the back of my mind a thought bounced around that this may have been one of Wright's houses that had been moved. When I had time to investigate after my trip that thought came into focus and yes, it had been dismantled and moved to Pennsylvania, thirty miles North of Fallingwater.
Three years later, in October 2021, while on a trip through Pennsylvania, we had the opportunity to tour the Duncan Residence.
Chicago Tribune, November 8, 2003 - "...Today, long after Duncan sold most of that land to developers, the view is of bulging houses with Greek columns, French dormers and all the other Old World touches the iconoclastic Wright hated. The house itself has crumbling concrete walls and a big crack in its family-room ceiling, which was caused, neighbors say, by a leaky roof.
"Now, the home could become the first Wright building to be
demolished in 30 years. It's under contract to an Arlington Heights company that wants to tear it down or see it moved so it can build three much larger homes on the 2-acre site."
The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy stepped in to preserve the house. The Conservancy arranged for the structure to be dismantled and at that point, finding a new location for the house began.
A solution was found. Polymath Park, in Pennsylvania. Polymath Park is located less than 30 miles North of Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. The 130 acre park includes two Frank Lloyd Wright homes, two homes designed by Peter Berndtson, and Treetops Restaurant. In 2000, the Papinchaks purchased a house which is now the Treetops Restaurant. In 2003 they had the opportunity to purchase the 130 acres and the two Berndtson designed homes, the Balter and Blum houses. Peter Berndtson (1909--1972) was an American architect. He studied at MIT for two years, and in 1938 joined the Taliesin Fellowship as one of Frank Lloyd Wright's apprentices. While there, he met and married another apprentice, Cornelia Brierly. They eventually settled in Western Pennsylvania.
In 2006, in cooperation with the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, the Papinchaks relocated the Frank Lloyd Wright Duncan house and painstakingly began the reconstruction of the house.
Interior and exterior battens lined up with the joints in the concrete blocks. Masonry blocks were standard 8 x 8 x 16". The roof was covered in red asphalt shingles. Horizontal battens were added, creating ridges, adding to the horizontal appearance of the house.
When the house was reconstructed in Polymath Park, exterior colors of the siding and shingles were retained. Concrete block, originally used in the Duncan House, was replaced with Maryland ledgerock, native to the area.
During a trip to Pennsylvania, we had the opportunity to take a tour of Polymath Park, have lunch at Treetops Restaurant, tour the homes including the Duncan Residence. The home has been meticulously restored. As you enter the home, the Gallery (hall) and bedrooms are to the left. Moving straight ahead, stairs lead down to the living room. To the right are the Dining Room, Kitchen and Family Room.
