line in 6 inch shingle courses. In the 1980s, the house was
covered in vinyl siding, but since restored. Few early
photographs exist of the Woolley residence. Grant Manson who
extensively covered Wright’s career, "Frank
Lloyd Wright To 1910" simply includes one footnote,
"...the Francis Woolley house in Oak Park, a design of late
1893, which is truly commonplace." Although the house is
designed with three octagonal bays, they are not as
prominent as the Emmond
(1892 - S.015), Gale
(1892 - S.016) and Parker
(1892 - S.017) houses.
Woolley was an attorney with an office on LaSalle Street in
Chicago. By 1911 he had moved to Glencoe. "Francis James

lawyer, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 17, 1865.
He was the son of James T. And Mary A (Shearman) Woolley. He

should be noted that Taylor Woolley, a young architect that
worked in Wright’s Oak Park Studio, in Italy while Wright
was preparing the Wasmuth Portfolio, and in Taliesin, is not
related to Francis J. Woolley. Taylor Woolley was born in
Salt Lake City in 1884, moved to Chicago, then moved back to
Salt Lake City. One other note: On the original plans,
Wright spelled the clients name with one "L", Wooley. His
name is spelled with two "L’s," Woolley.
