Title:  Stephen A. Foster House. Preliminary Staff Summary of Information Submitted to the Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks (Digital ) (Published by the Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks, Chicago, Illinois)

Author: Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks

Description: Introduction: Japanese art, architecture, and design have had a persistent influence in America since the middle of the nineteenth century. Except for the years of and immediately after World War Il, this influence, which gained  momentum after the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and after the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, both of which contained Japanese buildings and exhibits, has continued to today. Its most obvious impress has been on the design of the small American house of the last century, first in vacation homes and subsequently, as the size of single-family houses decreased, in year- round homes. As Clay Lancaster describes this trend in his Japanese Influence in America (1983), the seldom-used parlor turned into the multi-purpose living room, and the Japanese house, with its open interior spaces suitable for several uses and its minimal furniture, provided an inspiration and model...

STEPHEN A. FOSTER COTTAGE & STABLE EXTERIOR 2019

Stephen A. Foster Cottage & Stable, West Pullman, Chicago, Illinois 2019 (1900 - S.049-050). Set of 77 exterior photographs of the Stephen A. Foster Cottage & Stable. Photographed on October 20, 2019 during a visit to Chicago. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1900, it was designed the same year as the pre-Prairie Jessie Adams House, and the Bradley and Hickox Prairie houses..o. Wright wrote on the plans, "Summer Cottage for Mr. Stephen A. Foster. January 1900."
Stephen A. Foster was an attorney, graduated from Harvard Law school in 1891, and later became a judge. He also was a land developer. According to "The Investor," May 7, 1898, Stephen A. Foster was the Vice President and Treasurer of the West Pullman Land Association which owned 2,538 lots, around 480 acres in West Pullman. A portion of the acreage was set aside for higher end homes, which included Foster's Summer Cottage, which sits on six city lots. Foster's business was downtown. It may have been inconvenient to live year round in West Pullman, so they maintained an apartment in Hyde Park during the fall and winter, and their Summer Cottage during the summers.
The Fosters met Frank Lloyd Wright through family members. There daughter, Rachel Foster Manierre recounted stories of her Aunt and Uncle, the Frederic Bagleys, who Wright designed a home for in 1894.
The "Cottage" was built in a neighborhood called West Pullman. It is hard to imagine today, a "Summer Cottage" being built just 16 miles South of Chicago's loop. For a perspective, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Stohr Arcade in 1909. It is on the corner of Wilson and Evanston (Broadway), which is just a few blocks West of Lincoln Park, seven miles north of the Chicago's loop. At the turn of the century, Wilson was the end of the line. In 1900, the Northwestern Elevated Railroad ended at Wilson Avenue. Farms could still be seen from the elevated platform.
The town of Pullman was built in the 1880s by George Pullman and the Pullman Palace Car Company, because of a need for worker's housing. West Pullman was immediately to the Southwest, and developed for those that were looking to escape the grip of company town of Pullman.
As Grant Manson wrote: "...there was a brief period in the months just after the opening of the twentieth century when Wright designed some houses with undisguised Japanese details. They belong neither to the transitional period nor to that which followed; they are sports, in a class by themselves, but very revealing. regions of southwestern Chicago then known as West Pullman. The buildings have Japanese roofs, with rising ridgepoles and flaring eaves, and there is a little wooden torii through which one enters the grounds." Frank Lloyd Wright to 1910, 1958, p.95-97.
The pitch of the roof is steep, and the roof gables flair upward. This was repeated in both the Bradley and Hickox houses. The front entrance is off the driveway. The entrance is secluded by a prairie styled balustrade screen. Although heavily painted, the house is covered in shingle, a transition from his Shingle Styled period. Wright included one drawing of the house in June 1900 issue of The Architectural Review. Text of the perspective plans reads: "Foster Cottage and Barn at West Pullman, at a Cost of Both Complete -- Thirty Five Hundred Dollars -- Feb. 20th 1900. Frank Lloyd Wright Architect."
Changes have been made, and differ slightly from the original plans. This may have occurred after a fire in 1929. Wright placed the entrance on the North, facing the drive instead of the street, and secluded it with a prairie styled balustrade screen. The rear entrance was on the rear elevation with also was secluded by screens. An addition was added to the rear, and the rear entrance was moved to the same side as the front entrance, but at the rear of the house. The screens were removed.
A terrace ran the full width of the South elevation. A short wall enclosed it on three sides. Three sets of doors opened outward from the living room to the terrace. Balustrade screens decorated both corners of the terrace. Originally the terrace was open, but was later enclosed, and stairs added to the East side of the terrace.
As you stepped into the house, you entered the reception hall. Seating was built into the bay window on the right. Stairs on the left lead you to the bedrooms and bath upstairs. Past the stairway on the left was the kitchen and pantry. Straight ahead was the living room and dining area which was one big area, and covered half the lower level. It has since been divided into two separate rooms. Centrally located was the fireplace.
The "Stable" included a Carriage Room, and space for cows, horses and poultry, looking like a productive farm. The stable included a second level for the gardener's quarters.
