Title: Arthur Heurtley Residence, Oak park (1902 - S.074) 1992.

Description: Viewed from the Southwest. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1901. This was another home where Wright raised the living spaces, Living, Dining and Kitchen to the second floor. The Entry arch is reached by short stairs on either side of the front Terrace. As you move through the arch, you enter another space, where the front door is on the far right, not centered which would typical in most homes, but a typical to Wright's designs where the entrances were hidden from the street. Through the front door, you enter a large hall and stairs that lead up to the main level. The face of the house is made of brick, but designed in such a way to create horizontal lines. Photographed by Douglas M. Steiner on a trip to Oak Park in March, 1992.

Title: Arthur Heurtley Residence, Oak Park, Illinois 2019 (1902 - S.074).

Description: Set of 60 exterior photographs of the Arthur Heurtley Residence. Designed in 1902 by Frank Lloyd Wright. Arthur Heurtley was born in 1860 and past away in 1934 at the age of 73. He was a successful businessman with a passion for music and art, and was an early client of Frank Lloyd Wright, and a friend. Besides his involvement with a number of clubs and organizations, Cliff Dwellers, Chicago and Union League clubs, Apollo Musical club, Chicago Golf club of Wheaton and the Oak Park Country Club, he was also involved in the Les Cheneaux Club on Marquette Island.
The house is constructed with two colors of brick. The lighter protrudes from the surface creating strong horizontal shadows. Sandwiched between the lighter rows of bricks are single and triple courses of darker bricks. On the center of the front elevation is a rectangle of stucco, originally painted red.
The following are excerpts from Paul Kruty’s article published in Illinois Historical Journal, Summer, 1993, Heurtley to Bluemner: Early Impressions of Frank Lloyd Wright, Pp.85-92. Continue...

On July 19, 1908, Heurtley wrote to artist Oscar Florians Bluemner from the Cheneaux Islands. Heurtley pauses to consider the architect who designed his home and his island retreat, Frank Lloyd Wright. Heurtley now sees his home more as the realization of Wright's creative vision than as an expression of his personal needs as a client.
"When your letter came... I was more than busy getting ready to go away for my holidays, and since coming here, where I have had a cottage for over ten years (also my friend Wright's work), I have been trying to get things settled..."
"I wish you could know my friend Frank Lloyd Wright; I think you would like him. A man of fine education, a musician, an artist in many ways, a clear hearted, clear minded gentleman, a man of high ideals and aspirations; such is Mr. Wright; and I am most happy in the home that was largely the creation of his brain, or rather the outward expression of his thought at the time...."
"From my seat as I write, I can look over the waters of the bay, lying still as an inland lake, and reflecting in this mirror like surface, the wooded shores, and islands, and the tints of a sunset, that even you, gentle painter, could not successfully copy."
Set of 60 exterior photographs of the Arthur Heurtley Residence photographed by Douglas M. Steiner on October 21, 2019. (More photographs to come.)

Title: Arthur Heurtley Cottage Remodeling, Les Cheneaux, Marquette Island, Michigan, Portrait Circa 1910 (undated) (1902 - S.075).

Description: Portrait of Arthur Heurtley, facing slightly to the left, looking straight ahead.
Obituary for Arthur Heurtley, published in The Oak Leaves, Oak Park, Illinois, September 20, 1934. Arthur Heurtley, one of Oak Park's most prominent citizens until after the World War, died on Tuesday at his country place near Muscatine, Ia., aged seventy-three years.
Funeral services will take place at Muscatine this afternoon (Thursday) and interment will be at Chippiannock, Rock Island.
Mr. Heurtley was distinguished both in business and in movements for cultivation of arts, especially music. He was among the first to employ the art of Frank Lloyd Wright and the "Heurtley House" at 310 Forest, designed by Mr. Wright has been pictured in architectural publications in Europe and Asia and has had a wide influence on design.
In the garden of this house is the oldest inhabitant of Oak Park, a great oak tree, said to have lived a thousand years.
Mr. Heurtley became secretary of the Northern Trust company in 1889 when it was organized and served in that capacity until 1920 when he retired. He was born in Boston and came to Chicago in 1881, taking a position with the Merchants Loan and Trust company. He later was Continued...
assistant secretary of the Chicago Edison company and then entered the service of the Northern Trust company.
Until incapacitated by illness Mr. Heurtley was an active member of the Cliff Dwellers and the Chicago and Union League clubs, the Apollo Musical club of which he was president for nine years, the Chicago Golf club of Wheaton and the Oak Park country club.
Mr. and Mrs. Heurtley entertained frequently and their company was usually composed of those interested in music and the other arts and distinguished artists frequently were their guests. The interior of their home, including all furniture, was designed by Mr. Wright and the rooms were so arranged that large companies could be entertained easily. For nearly two decades the Heurtleys were among the most interested and interesting of village families.
Their daughter became the wife of David Wood Griffiths when he graduated at the head of his class at West Point. Later he was on duty with the army in Panama and Mr. and Mrs. Heurtley spent several winters in the tropics which they enjoyed greatly.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Grace Heurtley; a daughter, Mrs. David Wood Griffiths of Chicago, and a son, Richard Walter Heurtley of New York City.

ARTHUR HEURTLEY COTTAGE 2023

DID FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT DESIGN THE HEURTLEY COTTAGE IN 1898?

Arthur Heurtley Cottage Remodeling, Les Cheneaux, Marquette Island, Michigan, 2023 (1902 - S.075). Set of 53 exterior photographs of the Arthur Heurtley Cottage. In 1902 Frank Lloyd Wright designed a house for Arthur Heurtley in Oak Park. Concurrently he remodeled a cottage for Heurtley on Marquette Island, in Michigan. Arthur Heurtley was born in 1860 and passed away in 1934 at the age of 73.
In 1888 William L. Benham purchased and subdivided the northern point of land on Marquette Island. He then organized and developed the Les Cheneaux Club. The club grew as residents of Chicago and Detroit, built permanent summer dwellings. By 1900 a large clubhouse/hotel and some thirty cottages with boathouses had been built. Marquette Island is the largest island in the Les Cheneaux islands in northern Michigan, located near the northwest
shores of Lake Huron in the northern Michigan peninsula. The island is occupied mostly during the summer and accessible only by boat.
According to Paul Sprague at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Heurtley acquired the land in 1898. The design of the cottage is not attributed to Frank Lloyd Wright because of a lack of records. In 1902, Heurtley commissioned Wright to make alterations to the cottage. In the Frank Lloyd Wright archives, now at the Avery Library, Columbia University is one plan for an "Alteration to a Summer Cottage of Mr. Arthur Heurtley." So the alterations are confirmed as a Wright project.
The renovation included alterations to the bedrooms and bath on the first floor, and reconfiguring the basement to include a dining room, kitchen and servant's quarters. Plans appear to indicate that the basement was built into the slope. He also designed a fireplace for the dining room. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer indicated that on one of the drawings, Wright indicated the new work in red, Frank Lloyd Wright Monograph 1902-1906, 1987/1989, p.36. Pfeiffer published the color plan in Wright 1885-1916, 2011, p.153, and the text in the bottom right hand corner is just the opposite. Text reads: "New Work Indicated Thus -------------" (black line). "Old Work Indicated Thus -------------" (red line).
In 1908, Heurtley wrote to Oscar Florians Bluemner, "...I have had a cottage for over ten years (also my friend Wright's work)." He clearly states that the cottage was the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Excerpts from: Illinois Historical Journal, Summer, 1993, Heurtley to Bluemner: Early Impressions of Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Kruty, Pp.85-92:
In 1902 Wright created one of his most powerful and beautiful Prairie Houses for his neighbor, Arthur Heurtley. He had just remodeled Heurtley's summer home in the Cheneaux Islands at the junction of Lakes Huron and Michigan(3)...
Note 3. According to Paul Sprague at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Heurtley acquired the land in 1898, which concurs with Heurtley's recollection of "ten years" in 1908. The cottage is now part of the grounds of Les Cheneaux Club.
On July 19, 1908, Heurtley again responded to a note from Bluemner. The artist had tried to explain his resolve to abandon architecture for painting; his dedication and idealism apparently reminded Heurtley of his architect and Oak Park neighbor. Writing from the Cheneaux Islands, Heurtley pauses to consider the architect who designed his home and his island retreat, Frank Lloyd Wright. Heurtley now sees his home more as the realization of Wright's creative vision than as an expression of his personal needs as a client. The message is written on stationery marked "Les Cheneaux Club."

"When your letter came... I was more than busy getting ready to go away for my holidays, and since coming here, where I have  had a cottage for over ten years (also my friend Wright's work), I have been trying to get things settled..."
"I wish you could know my friend Frank Lloyd Wright; I

think you would like him.
From Heurtley's correspondence, it is clear that he is referring to Wright as the architect of the cottage. "...I have had a cottage for over ten years (also my friend Wright's work)." Heurtley purchased the land in 1898, had the cottage built. After a couple years, 1902, makes a few minor renovations. With the cottage in such a remote location, and in Northern Michigan where the winters are severe and the summer building season is short, why would he not go back to the original architect that was familiar with the project. Oscar Bluemner was an artist and architect. He would understand what the word "work" referred to.
Without the original 1898 blueprints with Frank Lloyd Wright's signature, one can only theorize that Wright was the original architect. But as we photographed the Heurtley Cottage, and study it first-hand, it was difficult to assume otherwise. Flared roof line like the Goodrich Residence, Oak Park (1896) and Smith (1896). Board and batten siding, canted base, similar details to the River Forest Golf Club (Also 1898) and Foster Cottage (1900), and Smith (1896). Flared walls, two pedestals at the front of the house leading toward the entrance.
So did Frank Lloyd Wright design the Heurtley Cottage in 1898? It seems very possible, and even plausible, but not going as far as to say substantiated. As a friend of mine once said, just as you come to a conclusion and finish writing an article, something new is discovered about Frank Lloyd Wright. We will just have to wait for new discoveries.
Many changes and additions have been made to the cottage.
East Elevation, Front of the Cottage: The only noticeable change to the East elevation is the addition of the front door and the enclosure of the "L" shaped covered porch that covered the North and West sides of the house. The porch is reached by a half walled walkway that extended out on the right side of the house. At the farthest end of the walkway were two pedestals. The original L-shaped porch was covered and most-likely screened, and the entrance to the cottage was two-thirds of the way back, into the living room. Today the doorway is set back approximately ten feet from the front of the house.
North Elevation: When William Storrer published The Architectural of Frank Lloyd Wright, 1974, he indicated that the screened windows now had glass, which may indicated that the porch had been enclosed. By 2023, an addition has been added to the North elevation, with a fireplace at the outer end. A dormer has also been added to the second level.
West Elevation, Facing the Lake: Storrer also indicated in 1974 that the dining room windows on the lower level, giving a view of the lake, had been replaced by french doors, and that the once stained board-and-batten siding was now painted. A balcony had also been added to the first floor. Today, the french doors have been replaced with solid windowless doors, indicated that the original dining room has probably been abandoned, possibly used for storage and the dining room moved to the upper first floor level. Windows may have been added to the second floor.
South Elevation: Many changes have been made to the South elevation. An addition has been added to the basement level. The stairway next to the bay window has been enlarged. A Dormer has been added to the second level.
